Between arrival at and departure from a seaside resort, we bear witness to a number of activities – tennis, ping-pong, horse-riding, kayaking, a country hike, a masked ball etc. – all involving a lanky, accident prone holiday-maker doing his best to participate in holiday fun.
Every effort by Monsieur Hulot to fit in during his seaside holiday, however, merely succeeds in creating chaos out of orderliness.
What makes this a cut above Benny Hill is an elegiac quality – a sense that what Tati finds funny he also cherishes. As translator and Tati biographer, David Bellos, writes, “It was through this film that I first fell in love with France. And I think that is true of a lot of people.”
